On mine, I could hear the heads moving and clicking (it was the second physical or "D:" drive in my desktop PC), so I assumed the physical mechanism wasn't ruined. Swapping the PCB board on mine (a generic 3.5" Seagate 80mb drive) was easy and didn't seem to be dangerous. As long as you make sure you're de-staticized (or whatever the word is), you should be OK. With the new PCB board, the drive was recognized, so I copied the contents off to a network drive that connects to my router for unattended backups, then put the PCB boards back where they came from, tossed the dead drive, and instgalled the new(er) drive in place of the old one.
