Perhaps I was a gifted child. Anyway, you will find that the lead paint is as hard as, well, lead. As the owner of a 100 yr. old house, I can testify that if you start scraping and sanding that stuff, you'll soon find yourself wishing you hadn't. And you would have to sell your house to pay for someone else to do it. The best thing I've found is to scrape only the loose edges, and then spackle over the seam with a good compound. I use MH Ready Patch - don't use the lightweight spackles. Buy a good mask, an orbital sander and a finish sander, send the kids out of the house, and sand away. Your entire house will soon be covered in white powder. Provided you don't have any moisture or settling problems, you shouldn't have a problem with the old paint flaking more.
BTW - if you have any tolerance at all for paint fumes and mineral spirits, then use an oil based paint on the trim. The result will be much better.
