Help with track lighting!

I'm looking into some track lighting, as I'm making over the den into a study. I've got CPA studies going on, often take work home with me and she has classes. I'm looking to utilize track lighting for this project. A few spots for awards and maybe a wall wash
I've found a deal on a box of Halo L2717 lights, the gimbal ring type in white. My question is as follows:
What are the pros cons of low voltage (?) units with the transformer intergrated into the light fixture versus the "in-line" track fixtures sans transformers? I imagine the "in-line" models which simply snap into the track without an on-board transformer have that unit by the outlet? maybe at the begining of the strip?
Why are the pros/cons of the integrated units?
Which one is quieter and more energy efficient?
Thanks a million!
