I've never seen that button personally. But if I had to "guess" I would say it may be to defeat the photoeye that is used on the door to scene if someone or something is blocking to door. If something is blocking the door, the door won't close. Pressing this button may allow the door to start closing. Why they would allow such a thing, I don't know. Seems like too much a liability. I don't think it has anything to do with smoke detection. If there is a fire in a elevator lobby, shaft, or equipment room, the elevator will recall to a particular floor, open the doors, and shut down. There is a system where firefighters can bypass the shutdown and operate the elevators (firefighter operation) but these systems are locked out with a key not accessible to the general public. Most of these controls are indicated with red lettering or inserts. There should also be signage in the lobby and elevator car that tells the firefighter how to operate the "firefighter operation". If this button was part of that system, it should be indicated on that signage.
