I admit to being completely humorless about this topic, so forgive the rant -- last year, while stopped at a red light in my Mini Cooper with my kids in the back, I looked into the mirror to witness a black GMC Yukon XL (or whatever they call those gas-swilling mommy-haulers that are everywhere here in the NYC suburbs) bearing down on me at roughly 50 mph. I could see the driver talking on her phone and looking down toward the passenger seat. She was not slowing down, or even looking ahead of her truck. It was probably the most frightening moment I've ever had, in or out of a car.
Miraculously, she looked up just in time to slam on her brakes (ABS I assume) and get it stopped less than 12 inches from the back of my car (and about 18 inches from the back of my girls' heads). She continued her conversation on her cell. If I hadn't been so shaken up and if my kids hadn't been in the the car, I might have stepped out and said or done something that probably would have gotten me in trouble. I sold the Mini shortly after that, and now drive a wonderful 9-5 Aero wagon.
So, forgive my seriousness, but when I see those oversized mommy-mobiles speeding around with drivers talking on the phone, I can't laugh about them any more.
