I think because of the nature of roundabouts in the UK and Europe, the side turn marker became a standard feature earlier on to help make entering and exiting roundabouts more clearly marked. I know 80's BMWs in Europe had them, but we didn't get them on US BMWs until the mid 90's. Eventually it seems like it became a standard item for safety reasons.
Saab was ahead of the curve, by having the side markers on their cars much earlier.
