Be sure to drink plenty of beer and eat the national dish "moules frites" (steamed mussels in white wine served with Belgian fries), followed by plenty of chocolate!
Of course, that applies to anywhere in Belgium ...
You say you'll be "near" Brussels. If you're not actually IN Brussels and have to take the train or whatever anyway, you might as well go to Bruges. It's absolutely magnificent and so small you can do it all on foot. For a few euros you can buy a guide book for suitable walks around town. One of the churches actually has a Michelangelo sculpture! Bruges is very touristy but should be seen at least once in a lifetime. Otherwise consider Ghent, almost as pretty and much larger.
If you decide on sticking to Brussels, the Grand-Place is the obvious place to start - and then just walk around and suck in the atmosphere (and the diesel particles ...).
Bon voyage!
