that really nailed all the American carmakers a few years ago. To pump up their apparent sales, they were forcing fleets of cars onto their captive rental companies. I was going to school near LAX and I saw strings of transporters unloading hundreds of new cars day after day.
Then what happened, the fleets had too many cars and they started selling them through THEIR captive sales efforts. And they were turning them after only 3 or 4 months! So they were underselling new car sales, with cars that were virtually new, with good financing and warranties. There was a stretch there when I told anyone who would listen that it was a great time to go to Budget or Hertz or Enterprise and buy a new "used" car. That was one of those projects with good short-term results but lousy long-term effects.
