In the early eighties, it was a pure post-Maoist experience, with tacky old boats, charmingly primitive and inept service, quaint river towns, and the unmatched scenery of the gorges, famous in Classical poetry dating from as early as the A.D. 618-907 Tang period (my specialty as a literary translator).
Since the construction of the Three Gorges Reservoir (don't get me started...) with entire cities (!) submerged under as much as 500 feet of water and thousands of cultural sites lost forever, the whole experience is likely to be very different from when I was bopping around China. Best advice is to get a guidebook that is certifiably describing the poet-Three Gorges situation and make your own decision.
But my short answer is that, seeing the three gorges, even changed as they are, is 1000% better than not seeing them at all. So, if you're going to China, and wall already have seen Beijing and Xi'an (you *must* see Xi'an), then definitely go down (or up) the Big River.
/Geoff
