thread on headphones alluded to already.
Noise cancellation is useful if you don't want to tune yourself out totally but reduce the loud near constant/periodic background. The sound quality is likely not as good as the isolation type as you are manipulating the original signal and add distortion due to the cancellation process.
If you want to tune everything out, then the isolation headphone would be better. You are cutting out all ambient background noise by forming a seal between the headphone/earplugs and your ear canals. The drawback is that you don't know/hear what's happening around you especially with your eyes closed, i.e. what if you are using the headphone while crossing a busy street.
There are headphones out there with reasonable compromise, i.e. with noise cancellation + isolation. Depending how one would view the compromise, you could view them as best/worst of both 8-).
I recall there was an older thread on noise cancellation headphones and that thread had more suggestions.
Funny you mentioned the Bose Wave Radio. My wife who isn't into high tech gadgets wants a Bose radio or a B&O system in her office. Mind you this is the same woman who bought a 30G iPod just let it sit fully discharged by the computer in her office but totes her CD player in her daily train ride to NYC.
I don't think Bose or B&O or any systems that look hi-tech or touted as hi-tech are worth that kind of money. There are many good SOUNDING radio (such as the Tivoli Radio) and compact systems out there that cost about the same and definitely sound a whole lot better.
