The expertise says that when you have more than 2.0L in a 4 banger, it starts to develope internal vibrations so therefore they like to use balance shafts.
I guess Volvo didn't get the memo since they have used 2.3 L engines since 84 and 2.1 L since 75 without balance shafts and no real vibration problems.
They did however Frankenbuild a 16V 2.3L engine between 89 and 91 using external balanceshafts which was a sad story in itself with lots of noise problems from the balance shaft belt and not a smooth running at all.
They even had to use a special style tail pipe with muffler inside (ala VW bettle) to bring down the high pitch noise from the engine and exhausts.
