To my knowledge SAAB purchased the rights to the TR7 engine and built it for the 99 and 900. SAAB did a great job with that engine.
The TR7 engine had weaknesses and was not regarded as a great engine, as installed in the TR7. The next Triumph model, and last, was the TR8 which was a TR7 body with the Rover 3.5 litre V8 (fornmerly a GM engine of the early 60's). The TR8 is a great sports car, for those who like the shape!
On the other hand the TR6 has a 2.5 litre in-line pushrod 6 cylinder, a totally different design which has been very reliable. The initial British version in 1968 & 69 had a Lucas fuel injection and hot cam and the engine was rated at 150hp making the TR6 a screamer. Unfortunately the North American (USA) emission controls requirement brought the engine down to a carbureted 106hp, much less sporty.
The engine of my TR6 has been rebuilt and clocked about 150hp on the dyno.
