Oh good thing.

As a kid we were sitting around in the harbor near the gas dock (well there may have been a boat involved; actually us kids were probably tearing around on shore while the older folks were sitting on the judge's boat (who happened to be a former navy flyer) after we came in from a day of sailing on our boat).

At any rate, this float plane lands out on the lake and makes it's way up the channel into the harbor, kills the engine near the gas dock, pops the door and paddles over. With a French accent the pilot asks about getting fuel. We soon learn he and his wife are from Quebec and are flying in this experimental home made float plane to the EAA. Apparently in parts of Canada it isn't unheard of to have aviation fuel at harbors for the float planes and he expected to be able to get some.

So they inform him no aviation fuel here but maybe they could get someone from the local airport to truck it out. A call is made but when he finds out the delivery charge he declines and opts to take on the low grade gasoline sold at the gas dock. Everyone is sort of shaking their heads but he is like oh it should be OK even though he clearly wanted aviation fuel initially.

As we are waiting for the word on the aviation fuel delivery everyone talked and checked out the plane. This little plane is some sight at this point. It has big experimental/uncertified for airworthness decals displayed in English and French. It is stuffed with camping gear and other stuff for a week or more. His wife only speaks french and her confused look at what is going on just sort of adds to the whole scene.

The plane had floats only and when asked how he was going to land at the EAA he said he would just land on the grass. Asked if he had ever done that he said no but he had landed on snow once and he expected it would be OK.

Then he pulled out a road map and went over their route (they were hugging the shore of the great lakes mostly) and asked about points along the way. His intended route was going to put him right through the air space of commercial airport so they advised him to fly out around that area which he seemed very happy to know.

With only the road map and everything else and this stuffed experimental plane it was pretty amusing. Apparently he made it or at least didn't crash in route as we never heard of any planes down.
