Yes, the animals were pushed out, and humans are especially good at pushing out indigenous populations of ALL species.
In the case of a place like where Yaofeng lives, the animals were pushed out ages ago. But they have adapted and are coming back in. Not unusual at all. I've seen coyotes on the streets of LA, and smaller "wild" critters are common in most cities. Deer are seen in many suburbs, have been for some time. Are they reclaiming territory or simply adapting?
Where I live, animals never really left (NH is 90% forested) and most people appreciate them. Had a bear in my yard not long ago, and a moose came by last week. Deer eat apples off my two trees. We have plenty of fox, coyote, and fisher cats along with the usual smaller stuff. It's more co-existence, which is how it should be.
Now if animals like deer and moose could just adapt to crossing roads so they don't get hit by cars.
