An observation true for all cars-
Last night my wife complained that her 9000 ('97) was feeling wobbly in the steering, so I took it for a drive. Even at slow speed going down the street I could see the steering wheel moving back and forth. We had taken the car on a long (~300 mile) trip last weekend and I thought the ride was a little rumbly, but I figured it was the snow tires (yes, I hadn't taken them off yet).
Jack up and support the fronts, and I spun the tires while sighting across the tread at a spot on the suspension. Sure enough, on the right front tire there was a section about 30 degrees wide where the tread raised up about 3/16 of an inch. Pulled the tire off, and looking at the tread along the direction of rotation, and the outer half of the tire at that point was obviously higher than the inner half of the tread. Most likely a belt had shifted. Threw on the summer tires, and the ride is nice and smooth.
I had felt some vibration earlier, but this came on pretty fast. So if you feel vibration, don't forget to check the tires for round. This is probably the 4th tire I've run into in my experience where it went out of round. Not an everyday thing, but often enough to keep in the back of your mind as you run through the list of horrible things when you find your car acting up.
