Daimler did not want critical departments from Mercedes to work on Chrysler projects. They were afraid that Chrysler cars would be perceived as cheaper Mercedes and would dilute the Mercedes name and stake. That meant that they needed 2 design departments, 2 executive departments, 2 of everything. Cost cutting also means removing redundancy and full cooperation.
They did not cooperate, they did not pursue the merger 100% so it failed. It was a stupid manner of conducting business, and that makes the original purchase suspect. What the Hell were they thinking? If you want to make something work, you need to be 100%. Instead they hobbled the merger from the onset.
My $0.02. Your mileage may vary.
