I'm trying to figure out why something in the oil could impact gas mileage so much...
What does oil do? It does lubricate. But the viscosity produces drag on the internal parts. So running a thinner oil will provide less drag, so the engine turns less energy into heat. Of course, you'd have to thin the oil out a lot to reduce that much drag. Oil that is too thin doesn't provide the lubrication it should, so there will be more wear.
Of course, oil also provides the ultimate seal between the cylinder wall and the piston, increasing the compression. That can increase power and mileage. So it could be providing a better seal there. That would be likely a viscosity increase.
Oil also acts to pull heat from components, but cooling most parts down a little won't impact fuel economy much.
If a valve was sticking a little, a solvent in the oil might unstick it. That could help.
Questions-
Did you notice anything different in the way the engine sounded/felt?
Did you expect good things to happen, gas mileage wise?
If the engine quieted, then I might go with the sticky valve thought. If you were expecting a gas mileage increase, then it might be a placebo effect. the biggest impact on gas mileage is how you drive it - if you're expecting the mileage to increase, you might also be making those little changes, like smoother, lighter accelerations, which can really improve mileage. Just a thought, because I'm not coming up with a lot of physics-based reasons for oil to make that big a difference. But I'm open to ideas.
