I've used GPS units when renting cars. Hertz uses Magellan. Avis uses Garmin. The Garmin unit was superior in ease of use. I bought a c550 unit and am very happy with it (four months). The screen doesn't wash out in bright sunlight and the voice directions (gives street names) are clear. The window mount is very nicely done, with a quick release lever to aid mount/dismount. For walk-around, the Nuvi might be a better bet.
There are scads of reviews of these units on the net. Enjoy the search.
Oh yeah, the c550 also warns of traffic congestion enroute and automatically re-routes. It did this for me in Raleigh a couple of weeks ago. I'd forgotten about the night work in I-40. Luckily, I was detoured to another route.
Garmin "quirk:" The otherwise pleasing female voice sounds just a tad irritated when you go off course. Bitchin' Betty says "re-CALC-ulating" as if she can't believe you can't follow simple directions. She's a hoot.
