To determine if it offers better protection, you'd have to compare the joule rating and clamping voltage of the two devices. Either device is a good idea for protecting against surges. The APC Backups will run your computer for a few minutes and let you save your work. Have you ever been using the computer and the power went out for 1 second, and you lost everything? That's the most common type of outage around here. It's not a good feeling.
I also have my Satellite receiver and tivo on a UPS, as they take an annoying amount of time to reboot, and I consider them valuable, especially the Tivo which has lifetime service for the life of the box, and lifetime service is no longer available at any cost.
For the best/easiest surge protection, have an electrician install a whole house surge protector to your electrical panel.
