OT: I finally got my award, eight years late...... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 23 May 2007 10:43:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have posted previusly regarding workplace frustrations and this story is in the same vein, although it is so sad it is almost funny in a twisted and sick sort of way.
Eight years ago I was awarded a special Energy Conservation commendation by my employer for excellence (or maybe high competence) on a national scope in what was my job assignment at the time. The company scheduled a special Energy Conservation Awards Ceremony to honor the dozen or so of us who were all to receive similar awards, yet kept the ceremony and awards secret from the recipients. Our supervisors were invited to this ceremony, given a directive to attend, and told to bring their Energy Manager with them.
My boss at the time was a real jerk and never invited me to accompany him. Instead he invited his girlfriend to escort him to this ceremony, probably thinking this would be an opportunity to show-off for her at a high level corporate function. Unfortunately for him, my name was called from the dias to receive an award. He could not accept it for me because then all the Execs would see that he had his girlfriend with him rather than following the explicit instructions he recieved with his ceremony notification. Since my boss RSVP'd that two people from his site would be attending the event, the Master of Ceremonies fully expected that someone would walk forward to accept the award.
After a very stony moments of bewildering silence one of the account reps from the local utility company who knew me, and was part of the event planning committee, accepted the award on my behalf and promised to deliver it to me since he visited my work location periodically. He called me the next day to let me know I had received an award, asked me why I wasn't there, we compared notes, and reached a consensus rationalization of what had transpired as described above. Unfortunately for me, my friend's next visit to my former work location didn't happen until after I accepted a transfer to my present job within the same company.
I received a telephone call from a former employee last year who now holds my past job. He informed me that my award had been delivered as promised and displayed in the company trophy case for the past 7 years or so, but the case was being re-worked and the award would no longer remain on display. He asked me if I wanted it, I said "No", but started to regret the decision moments after our conversation ended.
Last week I happened to visit my old work location and was meeting my former employee regarding some other matters. There, lying in his cubicle, was my award. Being somewhat of a junk collector he had not tossed it out as I had given him permission to do.
So now, 8 years later, I finally have this massive faux marble plaque hanging on the wall of my cubicle. The darn thing is so heavy it almost causes the partition to fall over. I guess it is lucky I have a sick sense of humor.
