I felt TomToms got only fair reviews. My Garmin is the sort that's in every Enterprise rent-a-car and has a VERY simple interface. It was $399 at Best Buy, looks a bit like E.T. and less techy-chic than the TomToms but it works perfectly.
Occasionally you and it need to agree on something like the terminology of a name.. such as 'route 29' vs. 'hwy 29' (meaning that if you think it's 'route' it might call it 'hwy' and won't find it till you use the understood word. BUT that's it. I eagerly recommend it.
Also, it offers the option to type in specifics like "Target" or "Starbucks" or categories where you can select 'nearest gas station' etc. Quite handy. I have OnStar and I've always loved it, but I really understand why so many have passed on it for the benefit and transportability of these portable nav systems. Good luck.
Also.. it should work RIGHT out of the box. If it doesn't find a satellite within 2 minutes take it back. You need it tomorrow.. make sure it works today.
Best of luck.
