Heater core...Over Engineered?

My heater core is shot and I need to replace it.I read some posts here where some said that the heater cores in our Saabs were over engineered and they never had any problems with them. That having been said ,what are the odds of finding a decent usable one at a wrecker? What do new ones cost? Is it worth it to have a rad shop recore an old one? Planning ahead for winter as that's when I put my Saab on the road.
