You know where your staying?

I have spent a good amount of time in DC, especially as a kid, but not so much in recent years (although last fall I was there for a few days). So I am not too current on the best bets. Also we often went via sailboat so we often stuck close to the harbors we stayed although we have gone by car many times too.

Few generalizations

West side is crowded side; east side has less tourist appeal so much quiter. Two different experiences makes it interesting. Number of nice parks on both sides.

Washington Island never really excited me much but it has been so long since I have been there I can't really remember what it offers although there was one near abandoned feeling (at the time) harbor on the north side I remember really liking staying at one going by boat. Rock Island might be worth a visit. BTW Capital "Island Wheat" beer which you will undoubtedly see is a WI brewed beer with Washington Island wheat (support the locals and it is good as our other Capital beers too).

The fish boil is sort of a DC tradition. It is done is sittings so reservations might be needed and that is often the extent of the menu so everyone really needs to be up for whitefish. I love whitefish but some hate it; it is admitedly a very bony fish. White Gull in Fish Creek had a slightly more formal (and pricey) take on the fish boil and we always enjoyed it (suset park at the end of their road is a good place to watch the sun crash after eats). In fact lots of good places to watch the sun crash on the west side of DC. Some of my most memorable moments in DC are doing just that.
