I used to think that. Then when my daughter needed her first car we wound up with a '95 9000 CS with a light pressure turbo. Since I have a 9K with the full pressure motor I knew what we were getting into and her car, some 10K miles later (and at 148K miles), has been just fine. Basically normal maintenance for a car of its age and mileage.
I think the turbo is the least of the worries, as the turbo usually isn't a major failure point on most Saabs until the miles are pretty high. Besides, there are plenty of other bits on Saabs that are (ahem) a little more problematic. That's worth a parent's consideration. I DIY and have a superb indy, so it's no biggie to me.
For kids with a heavy foot, turbo temptation can be a problem, and that is be an important issue, but also a different discussion.
