eating a piece of fruit and doing something like shaving or putting on makeup. And if one does as you suggest and cuts up the apple at home, it still has to be stored in a baggie or plastic container which requires opening while underway. That can be as distracting as peeling a banana.
Then there's reaching for the cooler that contains the cut-up fruit, groping for the water bottle than fell on the floor or the CD that went under the seat, trying not to spill hot coffee on your lap, picking out the next album on the iPod, putting the next cassette of an audio book in the stereo, wondering why the bozo in the minivan is sitting next to you at 80 mph but won't pass, dialing a number on the cell phone, dope-slapping the 8-year-old who's trying to moon passing cars, reading, checking email, avoiding the punk in the ricer who's weaving through traffic, watching a video, having se... well, you know what I mean.
Seems like fruit is the least of the problem. But yes, everyone should pay attention to their driving.
