I had a similar problem due to high-mileage wear...
splits in the drivers seat on my 2000 Aero after 260K miles. Like you, I pursued an effective and inexpensive repair...Replacement of the leather with labor appeared to be in the $400-$600 range.
At the suggestion of a friend I called Goldwing. I replaced the entire seat with a virtually new one (identical) for $250!!
Usually, it's the driver's seat that wears out. Call Goldwing, they may have a replacement seat at a vry affordable price. I was shocked.
