You may need to have an affidavit from your son's mother (if she is your current or ex wife/girl friend..... have I covered all cases 8-) ??) saying that she knows that you are taking her son in/out of the country (Canada/US). You probably have seen TV reports about taking a kid out of the country without the knowledge of the other spouse.
My wife will be traveling with our 10 yr old daughter to Canada this week, I just signed the letter yesterday. My wife has kept her maiden name after marriage so that makes things a bit more complicated crossing borders. I don't remember whether my wife had a letter last time she went to Canada with our daughter without me but my wife told me she was stopped and asked about it.
