This post uses the proper e-mail. And in case above gets deleted:
"I am a technical writer/editor. My training consisted of a B.A. in English with a concentration in Tech Writing. The Tech Writing portion was five classes. Many Comm majors were also in the program. The program I was in can be found here http://www.umass.edu/pwtc/.
I don't know if you really need specific training, but it looks good and it helps. The main thing is to have the ability to write clear and concise text with an emphasis on consistency. With the right company, you could probably get your foot in the door without training. It does however help your networking if you take courses. I found the job that I have now through graduates from the program.
Some of the books I read in my courses were 'How to Write Usable User Documentation' by Weiss, and 'Designing Visual Language' by Kostelnick/Roberts.
So yeah, in short, I think you have the right background to be able to do it.
Jesse"
