Considering 9-7x - winter traction?

My 02 Linear wagon, with 63000 miles, is still fun to drive, comfortable, and looks good.
But its been towed 4 times in the past year (and each time a too high repair bill), now the a/c isn't working (stepping motor and code 8), its due for struts.
My first choice would be a new 9-5 wagon -- but these seem near impossible to find.
I live on a very steep hill and even steeper drive -- where in the winter my 9-5, even with Gislavids, sometimes gets stuck.
So -- the 9-7 seems like an alternative -- and AWD is very attractive. In addition, the lease rates are a steal right now.
I'm not an SUV fan, but now drive relatively few miles a year (less than 10,000), so other than my "green conscience", don't have a big issue with somewhat higher fuel usage/costs.
Never having had an AWD vehicle -- what should I expect in terms of winter performance? Given the "mountain" I live on and drive, I would think snows would be a good idea.
I don't want to get a 9-7, then find I still get stuck in the winter!
Am about to go to the dealer for a drive -- it may be that I can't stand a "truck" -- we'll see!
Thanks -- Pete
