Call me cynical, but this AWD thing is based on a consumer perception of safety and automakers' catering to market demand to build profits and stay competitive. Nothing wrong with that, says my capitalist side.
Although not everyone here will admit it, AWD *is* better than FWD for certain conditions, especially in the hands of drivers who aren't comfortable, are not sufficiently skilled, or lack common sense about driving in limited traction conditions. Or when starting from a stop on an icy surface, especially a hill.
But it is by no means necessary for the vast majority of drivers. If one drives reasonably when traction is limited, good tires (and maybe traction and/or stability control) do just fine no matter which end of the car is being driven. Some cars are better at this than others, but that's a different story.
If you want to go really fast in limited traction conditions then AWD is better most of the time (it's why WRC cars are AWD).
But people in states that rarely if ever see anything more than rain thinking they need AWD is nuts. Or maybe marketing by the companies pushing AWD as an extra profit option.
