Zonealarm has its issues - unless you have a pretty high horsepower machine it drags down the speed a lot. It updates EVERY HOUR if you have auto updates turned on - no option to change that.
A good alternative is the combo of Windows firewall, AVG antivirus, Spyware Blaster, Spybot, and Ad-Aware. AVG catches viruses, Spyware Blaster stops the installs of new spyware, and Spybot and Ad-aware will kill the spyware the Blaster misses. You don't get 'real time' protection against new spyware though, you need to manually update and run scans periodically.
Don't ever use Internet Explorer or Outlook as they're the ones targeted by the malware. Firefox and Thunderbird are fine alternatives.
Or, you could get a Mac or install Linux on your PC and have far less to worry about.
