Thanks for all the quick, helpful information. In response, I *am* worried it is more than the oil pan, but tried to check for oil higher up and didn't see anything obvious. In reviewing posts here, there's no oil pan gasket, only some kind of sealant, right? Can the sealant go bad or need to be re-applied? I'm hopeful, but not holding my breath. Thanks for the reference to Peter's Zaab, I think it is time to call in the professionals, since the instructions here for removing the pan (to see if it is the issue) seem to require more knowledge and might than I can muster. To the fellow minneapolitan, did you see fewer saabs in SF than in MN? It seems they are everywhere here, and somtimes a status thing--new to me, since my 900 in MN was purely a work horse, one of the few cars I could barrel through the end of my driveway before the snowplow went by after a blizzard (teachers don't get the snowdays). I hope the bay area treats me and my poor saab well.
