I don't doubt that SAAB were gagged because GM wants to debut the technology in another brand. The 9-X (I think it was?) from a few years ago debuted as a SAAB, but was within a year doing the rounds on the show circuit as a reincarnation of the Chevy Nomad. Tailgate hatch, disappearing roof and all. It got a LOT more attention in the US as a Chevy than it ever did as a SAAB, even though it was now effectively a year older, and certainly not new, innovative or original. But, more Americans will pay attention to a Chevy than they ever will to a SAAB.

While it is disappointing that our favorite brand is not getting the public kudos it deserves for it's R&D efforts, there is one very big positive that I HOPE is coming from all of this. I HOPE that creating concepts that GM likes so much that it wants to adopt them for their 'core' brands means that GM appreciates the fantastic innovative contributions SAAB makes to their Corporation. If it does, and logic would suggest that it should, then SAAB should have a very secure future as part of the GM family. I know logic and Detroit don't always go hand in hand. But, in this case I'm hopeful. Of course, I was also hopeful that GM would bring the Opel Astra here as an entry level SAAB, to compete with the VW Golf/Rabbit/GTi and the small Volvo, but of course they brought it here as a Saturn. There are even suggestions that SAAB and Saturn will become one brand...
