What interests you? Where are you coming from? Will you have the children in tow? Where are you staying?
Like, if you're coming from NYC, you really don't need to take a trip to the top of the Sears Tower or John Hancock I'm guessing. But if you're from Nowhere, Nebraska, it might be fun for you.
Take a walk up Michigan Ave. starting at the river and heading north, and see the shops, get a sandwich and sit at Oak St. beach and see the sights (the beach is at the north end of Michigan Ave.)
Blackhawks are playing the Red Wings Saturday, home game. Might be hard to get tickets but you can always scalp some in front of the stadium.
I would delete the Maggiano's suggestion, while quite good, its still a chain and a bit contrived. They do make a good Manhatten, though.
Go to a place called La Scarola, on Grand right by Milwaukee/Halsted, if you want good italian. Then go to Richard's Bar right next door, for a real Chicago tavern. Or go to the Vernon Park Tap/Tufano's by UIC. Then go to the Hawks game. Tufano's/Hawk's game is an old Chicago tradition, at least with the people I know. Of course, there'll now be a million posts re: Italian in Chicago. These are all short (1-2 miles) cab rides from downtown.
Or go to Greektown just west of downtown. Eat at Parthenon or Greek Islands, but then go to Pegasus (the food's not that good) and see if they'll let you sit on the rooftop and have a beer - great view of the entire downtown, all lit up (might not be open after Labor day). From downtown a short cab ride or a long walk if you're ambitious.
If you're loaded (money-wise), see if the Cubs are playing. In fact, take a trip up there anyway during the game and hit all the clubs and restaurants around Wrigley, it’s a real local Chicago scene, esp if it's a home game. Gets rowdy, though.
Golfer? go to Cog Hill, or if you can't get too far outside the city, go play Harborside, a links style course built on a land fill, it's quite beautiful actually.
Have fun.
