As Dave says - it just pops out. Yes, easier written than done. But it is just a press fit. I usually take two small/thin screwdrivers and 'rock' it out - a little tape on the face of the dashboard to protect it doesn't hurt. You'll notice that the replacement controller is pretty long - so is the original.
I like keeping some string or twine handy. As you pull out the controller, you'll find the cable doesn't have a lot of slack. Once the connector on the back of the controller clears the dash, I like to throw a loop of twine around the cable. That way, when I disconnect the controller, if the cable springs back into the dash, I can retrieve it easily (don't ask me how I know this).
