It's quite easy these days, though depends on your experience with PC, boot loaders etc., which you may need if something goes wrong.

Your USB drive appears as just another hard disk. You can select it as a target drive in Linux installer. What is your intended system boot scheme after that, is another question... If you'll be using that USB drive stationery (even that it is temporary), installer defaults should generally just work. I have done this with WD Passport 160GB USB drive, but my intention was to use it as a mobile Linux system, i.e. I wanted boot loader to be on it. It installs fine, but there is quirk, that USB disk is somewhat slow to respond to the BIOS probe, and therefore BIOS decides there is no boot loader on it and skips to the next boot device... Disabling other [than USB] boot devices in BIOS results in "F1 to retry, F2 for system setup" error, but then hitting F1 works fine as by then (a matter of a fraction of second perhaps) USB drive is already online, system boots fine.

You can also try a live CD (Ubuntu, Knoppix etc.). They won't require any changes to your system, yet you'll still be able to access your existing partitions, in case you'll want to save any files you created in for exapmle OpenOffice, Inkscape, Scribus, Crita etc. etc. Applications will be much slower to start from the CD, but, once started will work just fine.

Good luck,
Sarunas
