do have clay or tile/stone roofs, although with the materials now they can make them look like wood shingles ala older homes.

having said that, most older homes still do have wood shake or tar shingles. although as people re-roof their homes, they are encouraged to go with the newer more fire resistant materials. insurance companies also offer discounts to re-roofed homes with tile/concrete materials.

as far as siding goes, that i cannot answer. lots of houses are old(er), 1920's-50's, and fires weren't concerns at the time they were built. lots of new houses have the "california/mediterrainian" look of stucco/adobe which may help.

unfortunately, as we continue to build out to the "wilderness", have nice windy narrow roads to the hills, and as people fail to do the basics to protect their properties fires will still rage. there are less and less resources to fight fires as well.

the people have my sympathies that have to deal with this, but fire is a part of the california landscape as well as the natural cycle of nature. we keep interferring with that and we get major major fires like you're seeing on the news. 14 at last count throughout the state. we here in santa barbara county are lucky because we had a 240,000 acre fire that burned all the back country this past summer.

even so, i wouldn't wish these traumas on anyone, and hopefully there will be minimal loss of life.
