I'm not a licensed plumber, but I've replaced/repaired a few. First note is that you have a gas heater. So a simple $15 heater element replacement is not a possibility. Original equipment is often the cheapest product that will get the job done. Have a look at the flame.
Remove the outer cover & look for a nice blue flame that is robust. Run a bunch of water and watch for the thermostat to do its job. It should cook a batch of hot water then shut off. You can replace the thermostat if you are not happy with what you see. If you replace the entire water heater, I recommend getting one from a plumbing distributor (Ferguson, Hughs, etc.) They sell a better unit than the Depot or Lowe's. There are some good plumbing forums on line. Do some google searches. Other than the tank rusting out, all the other attachements can be replaced.
