Or maybe I am reconstructing a memory here

Now I am doubting myself on this one. I am almost certain I have seen that some place but was it right? Maybe not although I do think Finish and Swedish Saabs both began with Y and it was the second letter that told you the country which is consistent with such an accounting although still possibly wrong as a general explaination. In fact maybe you needed to know the first 3 to nail it down for some makes. Even this might not be enough to really tell country of manufacture in all cases you might have to look at plant code further into the VIN.
All recent Volvo's I can think of have been YV# although many are made in Belgium. The Y probably could be related to Sweden but not necessarily meant to indicate country of manufacture but part of the larger 3 digit manufacture identifier for what were Swedish companies.
So although there is some madness to these first VIN positions for cars over the last 20-30 years I don't think there is a single character for country of manufacture in all cases. Sometimes you have to look at the first 2 or 3 as a whole depending on vehicle. In other cases, like Volvo, I am not sure that even the first 3 are enough.
