Upgraded laptop RAM, now it's running way too hot. Bad?

I have a 3 year old Gateway laptop that had 512mb of RAM. I upgraded to 1.25gb, and now the cooling fan is running at high speed all the time. My CPU temp is 75 degrees C (167 F), which is way hotter than normal. Gateway's info says I can safely upgrade to 2gb, so I don't know what's up here, except that I'm going to burn out my CPU unless I take this RAM out.

What should I do, other than junk this and buy a Macbook? 512mb is too slow to go back to! I even took out one 256mb chip and tried running just 1gb, but the same thing happened.

Help me, my computer savy friends!!
