You learned the correct way to drive, from experience European drivers have a better understanding of how to drive, I've been impressed by drivers in Mexico. The left lane should be for passing only, not cruising. If you used all the methods you mentioned, turn signals and hi beams to grab attention of a person cruising in the left lane you are not a jerk, it's just lack of knowledge of a person believing that there are two lanes to drive in and so they use either one. The fact they give you the finger is proof of their ignorance.
