Price guides: Edmunds, KBB, Nada.
A new Saab depreciates like MAD. Probably beatable only by the Italians in that respect. If you bought a 3-4 year old Saab, you will be in a better position regarding depreciation. Once depreciated, convertibles hold their value better than hardtops. Just remember the hood is the part the covers the engine, not the part the covers your head.
Manuals are more difficult to find, but probably easy to sell, as they are rarer, and if someone wants one, they have to seek it out and hunt it down.
The cars that keep resale value well will be the boring ones, like Toyota, Honda. European marques are cheap to buy and sell at a certain point in their depreciation, and don't change much in value at that point. A popular classic (antique, sports car, muscle car, a motoring icon) car also won't change in value much if you take care of it (store it in a garage at night, keep it waxed, etc..) and have bought a good specimen to begin with. Should be lots of choice for that sort of thing in California.
