SID display is fading fast

I live in Chicago and have an '02 Saab 9-3. Over the last year, the SID display has been fading with more and more of the display disappearing over time. It's impossible to see radio station frequencies, for instance.
Anyway -- my assumption is the only solution is to replace the entire SID (an expensive solution), but I thought I would check with others more knowlegeable. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Sadly, I have no mechanical savvy at all. Whatever I do, I'll be taking it to a shop for the work.
Thanks!
