I believe that the engine number is pressed into the block, just above the crank position sensor. With the hood open, look down at the block, near where it meets the transmission. You'll see a little black rubber connector with a cable coming from it - that's the CPS. Look just above it. As I remember, it's hard to read.
There is a correlation, somewhat. There was a serialized run of engines, and they went into cars. So for a given year, there was a range of engine serial numbers. I'll bet that there is a list of what engine went into what chassis somewhere in Trollhatten, but it's not common knowledge. And you can't derive the engine number from the VIN.
