It's not just Euro brands which are expensive... a friend of mine locked the key to her Focus inside and the Ford dealership charged her $80 to cut a new one... they would not provide the code to Bob the Locksmith up the street, so it was a dealer-only item.
Obviously the new key still needed to be coded to the ignition to start the car and that was another $96 - one hour of labor.
Ridiculous.
But, as time progresses, the key itself really isn't going to be useful. It seems like every car these days has keyless entry, and more and more have proximity-based starter systems. I suspect within five years we won't have conventional "keys" anyway, and Bob is going to have less to do.
Speaking of, a bunch of new houses in the area have keyless entry, too. In 20 years, Bob is going to be SOL.
