Do a little research. Then again it may scare you also. Statistics do not lie. Colombia is still not a very safe place considering everything. We are just a point in the statistics.
The leftist guerrilla and the past drug lords put their names on the map. Now most of the drug lords are gone. But the leftist guerrilla and the right wing militants are taking the place of the drug lords to finance their operation with drug and kidnapping. You can still pick your places to visit and be very safe. Are Colombians different from you and me? We probably have more in common than the differences.
The highlight of our trip was the Amazon. But we are glad we get to see many parts of the country and meet so many wonderful people. it is still a relatively poor country. There are homeless people on the street in big sities (same in NYC). Traffic is a mess also. To my understanding there are no limited access highways in the country. Most roads are two lanes. In the mountainous regions in Bogota, Medellin and Cali driving between cities will test your patience. You either have to pass numerous slow moving trucks and buses where the road signs advise against it or smell the fumes behind them. But in the plains driving was not very bad. Your weak dollar stretches significantly more. That is also why we shose south America. Europe is out of the question with our greenbacks so miserable.
No. We didn't see a single SAAB. There are many Renaults. In the more affluent section of the capital city we also saw Mercedes and Bmw's, but not many new ones.
