There was some sketchy reliability with the earliest ones, but within your budget are the '03 and '04 models which are just great. My wife has an '03 wagon and it's a terrific car. Holds a ton, gets 32-33 mpg highway and has been very reliable, now at about 65K miles. I'm very picky and I'd get another in a heartbeat. Or would replace my '96 9000 with one.
HOWEVER, since no one else has mentioned this, I will. Get a car on which you can document the service history, particularly the oil changes. Because leasing is a common way to "buy" cars these days, lots of people skip the maintenance. You want to know the car has been maintained, especially since these cars have turbocharged engines which are harder on the oil. If you buy from a Saab store they should be able to tell you if the work was done at a dealer. If you buy privately, ask to see service records. Then when you get it, make sure the updates to the PCV system have been done.
Otherwise, get yourself a 9-5 and have fun. Wonderful cars.
