You've raised some good questions. Generally, I believe that an extended warranty is good idea subject to these caveats.
THE CAVEATS:
1. Who’s writing the extended warranty? Issuers of these warranties have gone out of business leaving holders with worthless pieces of paper. An Audi or Saab CPO car is likely the safest bet in that regards. If the warranty is issued by a company you’ve never heard of, the risk might be greater.
2. Do you do your own maintenance? If you do, the economics are not as attractive.
3. Do you stay on top of maintenance, or do you tend to let things slide until there’s smoke or the car stops in the middle of the road with a puddle of goo underneath? If you fall into the later category, an extended warranty is for you.
4. Are you rough on a car? Your own life experience will help answer that. If you are and you don’t do your own maintenance the extended warranty is probably a good idea.
CONCLUSION:
1. Think about an extended warranty from a Saab or Audi dealer on a CPO car if: You don’t do your own maintenance, you tend to ignore things until there’s smoke or a breakdown, and you’re rough on a car (rough as in, you drive the p$%# out of a car regularly).
2. You might skip the expense of an extended warranty if you do your own maintenance, you’re fanatical (retentive) about staying on top of maintenance requirements, and your driving is easy on a car.
Having said all of the above....there are no absolute gurantees as to how this might play out for you....only informed guesses.
