Age discrimination is illegal. That fact would tend to dampen any overt discrimination. More subtle acts might be impossible to prove and difficult to discern.
The maturity that comes with age in addition to greater experience are usually a plus. A tendency of older workers towards a solid work ethic and a strong performance track record do count.
Before jumping ship I would sit down with your manager and discuss your interest in the promotion. DO NOT BRING UP AGE....it's insulting to a manager. Do bring up your performance track record, contribution to the team, personal plan to be there for many years to come and commitment to provide good solid value if selected. Good managers promote based upon perceived strong performance and anticipated strong value. Loyalty or longevity with the company is worth 1%....maybe. Don't indulge in the fantasy that your loyalty to the company means you deserve a promotion.
Managers are often paid salary plus bonus for results achieved. Think in terms of how you'll contribute to your new manager's personal goals and sell yourself as the guy that can do it. Meeting with the new manager you'll be reporting to can help; but prepare well.....sell yourself.
