I gave up on the 12 volt plug-in ones. They're slow, noisy, and they die. Like the others, I ended up getting a 115 volt garage model. I didn't get a big one - I don't have the space. I got a small, couple of gallon model that rolls around and is easily lifted. Not only does it fill tires A LOT faster, I can 'charge it up' by running it, disconnect it from the power cord, and roll it out to the shed to pump up that flat mower tire.
It will drive a small air tool. I put on a quick disconnect, so I can swap between a sprayer and the air filler. Having compressed air to blow out dust and dirt is very handy.
Will it pay for itself? No, not at fifty cents a shot. But that's a false economy. How much gas are you going to use driving to and from the gas station? How much more gas to find an air pump that's actually working? I find only about 20% of the air pumps are working. And they shut off and you need to pay more. I'm not doing it to save money, I'm doing it for the conenience. It's always there when I need it, not a couple of miles away at a gas station. If we based all decisions on payback period, you wouldn't have a car - you'd take the bus.
A good tool is always a good investment. I top off the tires on my cars about once a month. I've got three on the road at a time, so that's A LOT of trips to the gas station. And a mower. And the need to blow air. And a bicycle.
